Location |
The lovely Indian Ocean town of George is scenically situated on a coastal plateau at the foot of the Outeniqua Mountains. It is a pretty resort town with a relaxed "laid back" atmosphere which, coupled with continuity of training away from life’s working pressures, guarantees that our students get maximum benefit from each hour they fly.
George is 425 kilometres east of Cape Town and 370 kilometres west of Port Elizabeth on the Garden Route which is famous for the lush country side, beautiful beaches and magnificent mountain ranges and scenery. The airport lies about nine kilometres from the centre of town.
Cape Flying Services is based at George Airport, which is the secondary airport to Cape Town International Airport. It is a controlled airspace and fully equipped for all instrument and night flying. We are very fortunate in that the airport is not unduly busy and we have the airspace and personalised attention from the qualified Air Traffic Controllers. The airport has full fire fighting and emergency facilities and the flight school lies 30 metres from the main taxi ways.
George Airport is fully equipped to international standards with ATC, NDB, VOR, DME, ILS for day and night instrument conditions. |

Climate, Weather and Flying Conditions |
The climate of George is best in the world for living. It could be termed mild in the true sense of the word. It does not have Natal’s humidity nor Cape Town’s long wet winters. The days are normally calm between February and June with lots of sunny warm days and cool evenings. It is fun to fly in George all year round. There is no flying congestion and very few aviation restrictions.
It is a Malaria free area. The only thing one could expect to catch is a lovely tan on any of the miles of golden beaches. Rainfall is in spring and autumn. Average temperatures in winter are maximum 20 degrees C and summer 28 degrees C. Seldom does the temperature fall below 7 degrees C in winter.
South African Government statistics prove conclusively that George enjoys as much sunshine as any other part of the South African coastline.
In George the weather allows predictable flying schedules to be maintained. For example Cape Flying Services is always able to complete a basic 200 hour Commercial Pilot course in nine months (including PPL and Commercial Ground School). This means that a pilot qualifies and is earning sooner. It also saves him/her accommodation costs for the 9 to 12 months extra that the course would take in Europe. |

Recreational Facilities and Social Life |
|
Flight training is serious business and students will be encouraged to eat, sleep and drink aviation. George however is a marvellous town and offers many exciting diversions from an otherwise demanding flying course. Nearby Oudtshoorn is famous for its ostrich farms and the Cango Caves. Knysna, famous for its oyster farms and homecrafts, is 60 kilometres away and George boasts Fancourt, a country estate. There are several famous golf courses scattered between George and Plettenberg Bay - all designed by famous golfers - Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus. Surfing is excellent at the well-known Vic Bay. Outdoor activities include boating, fishing and deep sea angling, tennis, squash, hiking, bowling, horse-riding, scuba-diving and water-skiing.
Other amenities include a fitness centre, a Service club and an Ex-Serviceman’s Association, ample doctors, dentists, opticians, ambulance and rescue services. There are numerous clubs, pubs, hotels and restaurants. |

Transport |
It is highly unlikely you will need a car as Cape Flying Services provides transport to and from your accommodation at the Crew Houses and there is always somebody going into town for shopping trips and other short visits. Budget, Avis and Imperial car hire is available from George Airport. There is a local taxi service that operates in the evenings and weekends. |

 |
Clothing |
Smart casual attire is suitable for PPL students and it is unlikely that formal evening gear will be needed. Clothes made from cotton and wool are preferred to those of a synthetic nature. Loose fitting garments are not suitable. A warm jersey will be required for the winter evenings.
Students, undertaking professional courses, wear light blue or white pilot shirts with tie and smart black pants and black shoes. We encourage students to look the part. All the clothing is available at local stores.
All PPL Students must bring a tie - not that we are formal - this is for your solo party! |

Insurance |
| All Cape Flying Services aircraft are insured against damage whilst being used for Flight Training by enrolled students or qualified pilots. Public and legal liability to passengers and third parties is adequately provided for. Personal accident cover should be arranged by the student should you feel that this is required. Any personal equipment and possessions that you have at the Crew House are not insured and are held there at your own risk.
The initial excess insurance premium is included in your Course cost but should you fly over the stipulated time period i.e. one month for PPL and 1 year for CPL, the additional premium will be for the student’s account.
Medical insurance is advisable where a student may be unable to complete his course due to a medical ailment leading to hospitalisation and preventing him/her from completing his/her pre-paid Flying Course. An Adventures "Activity" Learning to Fly Policy is available from most local Insurance Brokers at a moderate cost to the student. |
